His Royal Highness, Prince Leopold, George, Duncan, Albert, Duke of Albany Earl of Clarence, and Baron Arklow, Prince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Saxony, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, Grand Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, was the fourth and youngest son of Queen Victoria and was born in 1853. He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1872 and pursued his favourite studies of science, art and modern languages. In 1876 he left the University with the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law. He travelled on the Continent and also visited the United States and Canada. He was a Trustee of the British Museum, a Bencher of Lincolns Inn and continued to take an active part in the promotion of education and knowledge generally.
In 1874, he was initiated in the Apollo University Lodge, No. 357, became S.W. the next year and Master the year after.
In 1875, he served as Prov.G.Steward of Oxfordshire and the same year he was appointed Prov.G.Master, being installed in 1876.
He also joined and passed the Chair of the Westminster and Keystone Lodge, No. 10, and the Antiquity Lodge, No. 2.
In 1877, he was invested by his brother, The Prince of Wales, who was the M.W.G.M., with the rank of J.G.W. of England, another brother, the Duke of Connaught, being made S.G.W. at the same time. In 1881, he was made a Past Grand Master in English Mark Masonry, and in 1883 performed the Ceremony when his brother, The Prince of Wales, afterwards King Edward VII, was advanced into the Mark Degree.
On April 27th, 1882, he married Helene Frederica Augusta, Princess of Waldeck Pyrmont. He had a delicate constitution from his youth, and it was universally regretted that his promising career was cut short by his death at Cannes on March 28th, 1884, at the early age of 31 years. He left a daughter, born in February 1883, and a posthumous son, born on July 19th, 1884, who succeeded to the Dukedom of Albany.
Such was the record of the one whose name we are proud to bear; it showed his interest in our ancient craft, and it was said of him that his whole life was one of continued exemplification of our teachings.
